Midrand is the name used to denote the area close to and surrounding the suburb of Halfway House, so called because of its position half way between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Although the town no longer exists, it having been incorporated into the city of Johannesburg, the name for the area has stuck. Midrand has the reputation of being the fastest growing region in South Africa, and it is estimated that by the year 2014, Pretoria, Johannesburg and all of the area between them will be one giant megalopolis. With such potential growth predicted, some good investment property can be found in Midrand, Halfway Gardens, Halfway House, Vorna Valley, Halfway Estate, Midrand CBD and in Glen Austin.

Midrand’s infrastructure is planned to expand, with Africa’s largest shopping centre planned to be built between the city’s general aviation airport and the new Gautrain station, now in operation. Midrand has been and continues to be a magnet for technology, with many businesses having moved into the area because of its excellent transport links and its proximity to Gauteng’s economic centre. South Africa’s largest conference centre, Gallagher Estate, is located close to the town centre.

At present Midrand has the one hospital, the Carstenhof Clinic, and one high school and a number of primary schools. The Midrand Graduate Institute is a local branch of UNISA that specializes in business subjects. The newly opened Gautrain and the N1 highway give the area easy access to many of Johannesburg’s private schools.
