Johannesburg North

This region of northwest Johannesburg borders Witkoppen Road, the main arterial road that skirts that city’s outer urban areas, dividing them from the agricultural holdings and equestrian areas of the northwest. North Riding is by far the largest suburb in this region. It is a suburb that once consisted of smallholdings, plots of land occupied by people wishing to escape the bustle of city life. The whole of this suburb is now cut off by traffic booms and gates, making it a very secure area. The effect of this has been to encourage development, and there are numerous cluster home and secure town house developments here. The surrounding suburbs of Sharonlea, Olivedale, Northwold and Sundowner are also protected by similar security measures.

Residents who purchased property in this area before the development escalation at the turn of the century still enjoy large properties. Amenities in the area include the modern North Gate shopping mall as well as numerous local strip malls and the Coca Cola Dome. Immediately to the north of the area is the Northlands Business Park and Kia Sands, where industrial property investments can be found. The Olivedale Clinic serves the area’s medical requirements. Schools are all found on the city side of Witkoppen Road, and the area is a short 20 minute drive from the Sandton and Randburg CBDs, Fourways Mall and Lanseria Airport, Johannesburg’s international general aviation airport.
