Midrand is the fastest growing region of South Africa with a number of new secure housing developments offering sound property investments The region, once called Halfway House because of its location halfway between Pretoria and Johannesburg, has been growing so fast that there is hardly a gap between its southern suburbs and those of northern Johannesburg. Kyalami is probably the Midrand’s best known suburb, especially in motor racing circles, where it is a well known venue around the world. Good investment property can be found in Kyalami Estate, Kyalami Park, Carlswald, Carlswald North, Crowthorne and in Noordwyk.

Midrand has a good selection of malls and shopping centres scattered throughout the city, and the largest shopping mall in Africa is planned to be built adjacent to Grand Central Airport, the city’s general aviation airport just a few minutes from the city centre. The Gautrain’s Midrand station is still under construction as of June 2011, and is in the same location. Many businesses, especially those involved in technology, have migrated to Midrand because of its excellent transport links and the fact that it is located in Gauteng’s economic centre. South Africa’s largest conference centre, Gallagher Estate, is located close to the city centre.

Midrand’s western suburbs are typically agricultural and make up the highest density of equestrian activity of southern Africa. This includes the Lippizaner showground arena, a major equestrian centre close to the Witpoort Dam. Lipizzaners perform every Sunday at 10.30 a.m. Midrand has just the one high school, but its excellent transport links make put it within easy reach of Johannesburg’s many private schools. The Midrand Graduate Institute is a local branch of UNISA specializing in business subjects.
